Advocating for Older Americans
In addition to the regular programs and services offered to assist seniors and promote independent and healthy lifestyles, under the direction of Essex County Executive DiVincenzo, the following initiatives have been created for older Americans:
- Created the nationally award-winning Café in the Park senior lunch program in which park settings are utilized for congregate meals. The program, which has been expanded to Branch Brook, Cedar Grove, Independence, Irvington, Watsessing and Weequahic Parks, encourages seniors to exercise and enjoy the beauty of the parks.
- Host summer-long Farmers Markets for seniors to purchase fresh, locally-grown produce
- Host Annual Essex County Senior Wellness Day to raise awareness and link seniors to programs and services offered by Essex County, community-based organizations and health care facilities
- Regularly obtain grant funds to introduce new buses to the Special Transportation Program that provides free rides for older Americans to doctor visits, supermarkets and social events
- Host Older Americans Month Celebration to recognize senior citizens who have contributed to the community and continue to serve as role models
